Mission Statement
The Classics Department at the 91¸£ÀûÉç fosters engagement with cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world by supporting students in their studies, faculty in their teaching and research, and the public in its curiosity. While we have a central commitment to ancient Greek and Roman cultures, we emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of Classics as a field that allows us to explore beyond these geographical and chronological parameters. We are engaged with cultural issues and sources of evidence that involve history, art history and archaeology, religion, philosophy, and Greek and Latin languages and literatures. By delving into the ancient past, Classics offers essential approaches to addressing pressing questions of our times.Ìý
Thus we aim to:
- Develop students’ skills in oral and written communication and in critical thinking;
- Train students in the disciplinary skills of our field, including language, literature, visual and material culture, and the connections between them;
- Foster depth and complexity in students’ thinking and ability to work across cultures, disciplines, time periods, and issues;
- Instill in students historical awareness of human issues and the manifold ways in which history shapes our current physical, political, and social environments;
- Promote interdisciplinary approaches and global perspectives.
