ProfessorÌýRaymond's research is interdisciplinary, centeringÌýon the use of language in everyday life. For him, the study of language provides theÌýmeans through which the moment-by-moment 'doing' of social life is accomplished and can be systematically investigated. HeÌýis particularly interested in situations of contact—when divergent languages, dialects, cultures, etc. come together in interaction—with a primary focus on Spanish speakers in the United States. HeÌýbrings togetherÌýmethods from Conversation Analysis, Interactional Linguistics, and SociolinguisticsÌýto investigate language use in both institutional and non-institutional contexts, routinely linking interactional practices toÌýlarger themes, including questions of race/ethnicity, individual/group identity and culture, andÌýrelations with social institutions. His work has appeared in a disciplinarilyÌýdiverse set ofÌýjournals which range fromÌýLinguisticsÌý(e.g.,ÌýLanguage,ÌýLanguage in Society,ÌýJournal of Sociolinguistics), to Communication Studies (e.g.,ÌýResearch on Language and Social Interaction, Discourse & Communication), toÌýHealthcare (e.g.,ÌýPatient Education and Counseling).Ìý
