Organizing/Structuring Remote Learning

Mental Health challenges: 1; Classes?coursework/projects: 2; Having/Not having a job: 2

by Jack Hermann, Ace Blue听and Graham Hickey

Introduction

Our class project sought to identify the effects and/or reactions towards remote learning from college-level students. Given the recent changes in the worldwide epidemic schools nationwide have converted to remote learning scenarios. This topic is something we need to address as people are stressed and confused during these times. We are all on lockdown so it's challenging to stick with previous schedules or routines. That is why we are creating this project. We are looking for ways or strategies to stay on top of our workload and try to keep our routine/schedule as similar as it was previous to quarantine.

Methodology

After dividing up sections of the class project, we were tasked with identifying the changes in the way students stay organized/structured in their academic situations. To identify these changes, we created a survey. The survey questions look for how you are adjusting in terms of your organization and structure during these difficult times. These are the questions we asked:

  • What circumstances, if any, during the COVID-19 epidemic have affected organization in your remote learning experience?
  • How are you staying organized, through remote learning, during this epidemic?
  • On a scale of 1 to 5, how seriously do you take your academic attendance with remote learning and why?

By asking these questions we can compile an informative detailed description of what people in our community are trying, how they are adapting, and what we believe are the most simple and efficient ways to stay organized and structured while in quarantine.

Results

As of April 27, 2020 we have received 28 responses:

To: What circumstances, if any, during the COVID-19 epidemic have affected organization in your remote learning experience?

To: How are you staying organized, through remote learning, during this epidemic?

To: On a scale of 1 to 5, how seriously do you take your academic attendance with remote learning and why?

25 responders indicated why:

鈥淩emote learning isn't too strenuous, but my flight school is harder to try and make sure I stay current with.鈥

鈥淣ot being on the college campus makes the productive mindset hard to get into.鈥

鈥淢otivation is low when my bed is 5 feet away.鈥

鈥淚 take my attendance seriously but do occasionally miss lectures if I need the extra sleep.鈥

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important to attend class but not as important as in person classes because now I can watch the lecture recordings鈥

鈥渞elaxed attendance policies are necessary but don鈥檛 encourage attendance鈥

鈥淚 only have one class that is mandatory at our regular time to be on zoom and participate throughout the lecture and lab. Other than that, I try my best to complete assignments on time for other classes.鈥

鈥淚 mean I'm keeping my grades up I'm not bailing on assignments or zoom classes I'm doing the work.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 hard but I try to get everything done, just hard to focus at home with family and pets鈥

鈥淚 think it's hard to hold myself accountable, my schedule is absolutely non-existent鈥

鈥淶oom lectures seem much more difficult to understand, so I stick to reading course materials.鈥

鈥淥ur attendance isn鈥檛 being taken and nothing we are doing is being graded鈥

鈥淔or some of my classes I always attend but some of the ones that I was previously doing well in I won鈥檛 attend and I鈥檝e been doing much worse.鈥

鈥淥nline classes have no physical aspect which helps me learn, making lectures seem less useful and in person and making me less likely to attend, especially without attendance criteria鈥

鈥淚 attend only if there is important info or mandated attendance鈥

鈥淔or the most part, I check all my classes as well as my email multiple times a day to ensure I do not have any sort of assignments or changes that arise. I also try and grind through most of my work to make sure I get it done.鈥

鈥淚 don鈥檛 want to have any more absences to put my legibility in Jeopardy鈥

鈥淚 am always attending class because I payed for it鈥

鈥淪till serious, but less motivated鈥

鈥淚 attend every class to get good grades.鈥

鈥淚 am serious鈥

鈥淎 lot of classes are prerecorded and often times teachers in live lectures don鈥檛 answer questions as well as they would in person.鈥

鈥淗ard to teach yourself鈥

鈥淚 make sure I attend classes and finish my work on time鈥

鈥淚 still go to most classes but don't pay attention as much鈥
